This Single Edition necklace is comprised of ten rarely seen antique Millefiori Venetian Trade Beads produced most heavily during the mid 19th century through the 1940s in Venice, Italy. In addition to the Millefiori beads, also known as African Trade Beads, I've included two tiger striped hand-painted beads, one barrel-shaped Agate, and four hand-painted ceramic beads, all of vintage quality. The beads were all hand strung, finding themselves between beads of black Jasper Gemstones and gold plated metal beads. The necklace was completed with a gold flower shaped toggle clasp. This necklace was designed to be worn double-stranded allowing the wearer to arrange the strands to whatever length she so desires, thus changing the positioning of the beads. The necklace can be worn as one long single strand, however, care needs to be taken to avoid entanglements. Better yet, wear it as a multiple strand bracelet! You may be wondering why this necklace is priced as it is, so let me share a bit of history relative to these rare and fancy Venetian beads. Years past, Millefiori beads could be found with ease, however, they are are quickly disappearing from the marketplace making them more difficult to locate, and of course, more expensive to purchase. These beads were produced by combining separate canes ( a core, plus numerous surface canes), allowing the bead makers to layer the glass and create many different colorful patterns, thus giving them the name of Millefiori, (thousand flowers). The canes were then cut into pieces, cleaned, polished and loaded by the thousands into cargo ships, destination; West Africa where they were used as currency to purchase ivory, gold, diamonds, foods, and sadly humans. The African chiefs treasured these beads, as they also had great intrinsic value, symbolizing social standing and wealth. If beads could talk, I wonder what stories these Millefiories would tell?
